tracking device for bicycle?

kittysaysmeow asked:

I am planning on purchasing a motorized bicycle (not a moped or scooter, a regular bike with a little engine attached, one of these: http://www.motoredbikes.com/gallery/my/index.jpg

The problem is that I live in a very high bike theft area and I am really worried about it getting stolen, esspecially with the fancy engine and all. I have already lost two bikes worth nowhere near as much as this one will be.

The best idea I’ve heard so far is to buy one of those disposable cell phones with GPS and hide it somewhere on the bike so if it’s stolen I can track it on the internet.

Any ideas for how I could securely hide the phone without the theif finding it right away?

Where can I get this kind of phone for cheap, prefferably pay as you go since I won’t be using it as an actual phone.

Also, any other ideas for some sort of low cost tracking device I can use?

Other ideas besides tracking? (I do plan on using two kryptonite locks)
Also, locking it up in safe places is not always possible. Sometimes I need to leave it overnight. The two U-locks will help, but I need something eles just in case!

Wouldn’t the phone need to have power to be tracked via GPS? Where would you hide a cell phone on a bike?

This is the only solution I know of, this system works and was responsible for busting up a near-by bike theft ring.

The phone idea is dumb and will NOT work.

Best solution in a really bad area, forget the motor. Buy $30 used bikes and lock ‘em. When stolen little is lost.

Get a good lock and use it when ever you can. Make note of the serial number on the bike and write it down. Check with your local law enforcement agency and see if they have a bicycle registration process to help aid in getting it back to you if it is stolen. You may be able to take out an insurance policy on it.
